Bridging Education and Employment

BE Students Tour Local Manufacturing Plant

Connecting Classroom Learning to Businesses in Moshi

This month Make A Difference Now’s Business Empowerment (BE) Program stepped beyond the classroom and into the world of manufacturing during an educational tour of Kilimanjaro International Leather Industries (KLICL). The visit was designed to give students hands-on exposure to career pathways, industry operations, and real employment opportunities within their own community. This visit embodied our mission to help youth and women transition from education to employment.

Understanding the Leather Manufacturing Process

During the tour, students explored the full shoe production cycle and gained a step-by-step understanding of how leather footwear is created. Observing production in action allowed participants to connect technical skills with real workforce applications.

Students learned about:

  • Leather cutting and precision preparation

  • Stitching and assembly techniques

  • The shoe lasting process that shapes footwear for durability and comfort

  • Sole production and attachment

  • Final quality checks and product finishing

Seeing each stage of production helped students appreciate the craftsmanship, collaboration, and technical expertise required in modern manufacturing industries.

Workforce Awareness

The experience quickly became interactive, with students asking insightful questions about:

  • Environmental sustainability and factory operations

  • Export opportunities and global markets

  • Hiring practices and workforce skills employers value

These conversations helped students connect their Business Empowerment training with real employer expectations. Exposure to industry professionals helps participants better understand workplace standards, communication skills, and career possibilities.

Building Community Partnerships That Create Opportunity

The welcoming environment created by the KLICL team made the experience especially impactful. Staff members provided detailed explanations and encouraged student engagement throughout the visit.

As BE Program instructor Bruno shared:

“I liked the readiness of the staff to receive us and give us information on the facilities. They were patient, and they gave us room to learn.”

Partnerships like this strengthen collaboration between local employers and workforce training programs. They also help students build confidence, professional networks, and awareness of job opportunities available in their region. These experiences also support local economic growth by preparing motivated, skilled, and workforce-ready graduates who can contribute meaningfully to their communities.
